Why is recording your own music so psychologically difficult? In what ways are we putting too much pressure on ourselves? How can we zoom out and see the bigger picture in order to put our bodies and minds in the optimal state to make great recordings of our songs? I make the case that by deeply considering and meditating on the transient nature of our existence --- we can loosen our grip on our art in a way that helps us capture better, more honest recordings of our songs. Death has a way of minimizing most of our problems. When we honestly look at our own mortality, recording our music can be a playful experiment of capturing our essence without being too precious and perfectionistic. Our songs are at their core, an expression of the inexpressible mystery of our human lives. When we honor that mystery and embrace our fragile humanity, we are free to do the work we are here, however briefly, to do!
