Johann Smith traveled the world for more than a decade, playing professional soccer in England, Canada, Croatia, Finland, Sweden and Toronto. At 30, he decided it was time to embark on life’s next journey.

Now Smith, 34, is part of a unique cohort at Stanford. He's one of 60+ transfer students on campus, who range in age from 19 to 51. He's majoring in American history and taking the classes he'll need to apply to medical school.

“I've lived one life already," he says. "I've lived one dream. And now I’m here to realize another."
