Given the alarming state of our ecosystems, it is no longer sufficient to protect the nature we have left. We also need to restore nature that has been degraded.

In this episode, Greens/EFA MEP Rosa d’Amato visits the Torre Guaceto marine reserve in Puglia, Italy. Created in 1991, the reserve protects an area with some of the highest biodiversity in the Mediterranean including habitats such as seagrass meadows, sandy beaches and deep-sea Mediterranean coral formations. In one part of the reserve, all activities are forbidden, including fishing. In another part, small-scale fishing is allowed but the type of gear that can be used is restricted. The Torre Guaceto marine protected area brings clear benefits to the fishers who have access to it, but also to fishers in adjacent areas.
