Radio Caroline was a pirate radio station near London, broadcasting from a boat in an undisclosed random location since only BBC government stations were legal at the time. The Beatles were their most played artist and they frequently supported them by doing promos and interviews with them. The interview was done by Tom Lodge on land as the Beatles seemed to be a bit hesitant to go on the boat. (although Paul said he would stay overnight on it.) The interview is more unhinged than the standard stiff BBC style. (e.g. when did you first have sex??) The upcoming album they were just starting to work on would turn out to be Revolver. They started recording the first version of Tomorrow Never Knows the week after this interview.
