Meningitis is an inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. Several bacteria cause meningitis, including meningococcus, pneumococcus and Haemophilus influenzae type b. Some viruses, such as measles and mumps, can also cause meningitis. Viral meningitis often not only causes inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, but it also affects the brain itself. This is called meningoencephalitis.

In this video, Drs. Paul Offit and Anjuli Gans from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia talk about meningitis, what causes it, how it’s treated, and its tendency to cause lingering effects. They also share their experiences treating babies and teens with meningitis and discuss the importance of vaccination for preventing infection.
