We humans have a funny way of doing harm to the environment and then being surprised when it ends up harming us. In Bengaluru, and elsewhere in the country and world, the Silicon City with its traffic jams, once again got infamous. Viral images and videos showed people waiting with cans and vessels near water tankers. The hi-tech city was on its knees! But it was no surprise at all. This should have happened long ago in fact. We get water from a 100 kms away and it is pumped up an incline in the topography. When the river catchment is denuded of trees, its holding capacity goes down. The city that once had over a 100 lakes brimming over and keeping the surroundings cool too, lost over 60 pc green cover and many of its lakes encroached upon. With 80 pc and more of the city paved, water has not much ways to percolate and replenish the groundwater. On top of it all, the population at 1.4 crores has overshot that of neighbouring Chennai. It was just 55 lakh in 2000.
