But would you consider Friends a golden age show? Seinfeld? The Office? Although they’re all good shows, they’re not exactly in line with what the bigwigs behind the scenes want to make. When you consider that The Office and Friends are the two most watched shows on Netflix, you can’ help but wonder why. Those are the questions we’ll be tackling today: why does everyone still love these shows? And why, if everyone loves them, are there no upstarts trying to take their place?

Along the way we’ll be taking some detours through the history of TV, the history of the people who watch it and the politics and finance of good taste.
