Tim Hicks of Industry Garage didn’t want to start with something easy for his first EV build. Instead, he dove fearlessly into the deep end with this wild take on a ’77 Datsun 280Z. “I brought it to the guys at Make Haste Corp – Ash Thorp and Carlos ‘ColorSponge,’” says Hicks. “We had the idea of building an electric Z. I had a Tesla motor sitting around, so I went out and found this car. It was a $500 rusty shell six months ago.” From those essential ingredients, Hicks and the Make Haste crew set about crafting a unique Tesla-powered Z-Car that combines sophisticated, aggressive style with performance to match. For the right look, the team fabricated a carbon-fiber body bristling with bold flourishes while still remaining tasteful and unmistakably a Z-Car. To back up the car’s retro-futuristic performance aesthetic, Tim and his team powered the Z with a 400-hp Tesla motor and used AEM EV components to integrate its systems, enabling it to run flawlessly. The result is a pinnacle statement that shows the exciting potential of cutting-edge technologies combined with iconic vintage cars.
