The BMW M3 has always been a performance icon, but the addition of a long-roof Touring model adds a touch of practicality to the formula. We got behind the wheel to see if the first-ever M3 wagon is the ultimate daily driver.

Walking up to the M3 Touring, its aggressive styling leaves no doubt about its performance intentions. The bulging fenders, quad exhaust tips, and sculpted front fascia with massive air intakes are pure M car. However, the elongated roof and capacious cargo area out back add a dose of versatility lacking in the standard M3 sedan.

Opening the rear hatch reveals a generous 500-liter cargo hold ready to swallow all your gear. Fold the rear seats and you have space to rival many crossovers. But the real magic happens when you turn the bright red starter button.

The 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six erupts with a crackling exhaust note that immediately gets your heart racing. With 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque routed through an eight-speed automatic and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the M3 Touring rockets to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. Turn off the traction control and the rear bias allows smoky powerslides if you're feeling mischievous.

But the M3 Touring isn't a one-trick pony. The adaptive dampers provide a surprisingly supple ride in Comfort mode, while cranking them up to Sport or Sport+ tightens everything down for ultra-precise handling. The steering is communicative and perfectly weighted, while the massive brakes have no trouble erasing speed.

Inside, the familiar M3 cabin provides a great place to spend time. The heavily bolstered seats keep you planted, while the traditional analog gauges and red accent lighting preserve a sporty feel. The iDrive infotainment system takes some getting used to but offers plenty of features.

Our main gripes are fuel economy that struggles to exceed 20 mpg and a price tag that starts at $85,000. But compared to the $110k-plus you'll pay for the new hybrid Mercedes-AMG C63, the M3 Touring is something of a performance bargain – provided you can find one on a dealer lot.

Overall, the BMW M3 Touring blends the brand's legendary driving dynamics with real-world practicality in an intoxicating package. If you want one vehicle that can do it all – haul the family, run errands, and still set lap records – this mighty wagon has you covered. Just be ready to deal with eye-watering fuel bills and sticker shock when you see the MSRP.
