Synopsis: In the 1980s, The Shining Path drove native Peruvians out of their villages, deeming them too 'ignorant' to truly understand Maoist principles. Ten years later, the native population are moving back. However, this hasn't come without its difficulties; while many now live in shanty towns, they often come back to a destroyed village worse from the hellhole they just left, and the government has been incompetent in helping the refugees. ABC Australia looks at both sides of the story. It looks firstly at how the 'Shining Path' was formed, why it went on its brutal rampage, and talks to a former member of the organisation. Secondly it looks at the lives of the native population, and how it is moving on from its violent and troubled past.
