The causes of tinnitus depend on the amplitude and frequency of different sounds. Tinnitus sounds can be mild but also be loud, and that is quite debilitating. But to understand the causes of tinnitus, we must first look at some of the tinnitus sounds:

-whistling sound
-sound of sea waves crashing
-chirping sound of crickets
-sometimes pulsatile, like a pulse causing a ringing in the ear.
-bees humming
-cooking in a pressure cooker

CAUSES OF TINNITUS

Tinnitus can be caused due to many diseases, and it sometimes becomes difficult to pinpoint the causes of tinnitus. But here are some known causes of tinnitus:

-- Loud sound and music: The most common cause of tinnitus is exposure to loud sound. If you are at a place where there is loud music or if you listen to loud music with earphones, it can cause tinnitus symptoms.

-- Certain drugs: Drugs like aspirin, diuretics, quinine, and exposure to other anticancer drugs are sometimes seen as causes of tinnitus.

-- Inner ear problems: Problems in the inner ear can also be the cause of tinnitus. It can be caused by tumours inside the head or other inner ear problems.

-- Muscular myospasm: Diseases in the temporomandibular joint, vascular malformations, and some other diseases can also be one of the causes of tinnitus. These diseases stimulate the inner ear hair cells and cause a subjective sensation of sound for the patient.

HOW TO CHECK CAUSES OF TINNITUS

Though difficult, treatment of tinnitus in the ear is not untreatable. It has been seen that many patients don’t need a cure for tinnitus and have been able to live with the symptoms for life. But there were others who needed treatment with proper diagnosis and tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT).

To estimate the causes of tinnitus and the cure, a patient has to undergo an audiogram that tells us if the patient is suffering from hearing loss or not. The audiogram also reveals the frequency of the tinnitus, which is matched to the amplitude of sound to get an idea about the causes of the tinnitus.

CURE FOR TINNITUS

-- Stay away from loud sounds and music
-- Avoid drugs that are proven to be causing tinnitus
-- Prescribed medication to relieve tinnitus
-- If the above methods do not work, tinnitus retraining therapy sessions are usually advised. During this therapy, a pleasant sound is created and the patient then gets used to the sound thus diverting concentration away from the tinnitus sounds. This helps create a pleasant association with an outside sound and patients learn to live with their tinnitus.
