If we want to reduce inequality, if we want new types of more sustainable growth, if we want growth from innovation and investment rather than consumption – we really need to rethink our economy in bold and concrete ways. Above all, says Mariana Mazzucato, professor in the economics of innovation and public value at University College London (UCL), this involves thinking of public institutions as creative agents rather than as 'fixers' fiddling with autonomous systems from the edges. Mazzucato is the founder and director of the UCL Institute for Innovation & Public Purpose (IIPP) and author of The Value of Everything.
