Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Wednesday that the federal government will be proposing a new renters’ bill of rights in the upcoming budget that will “create a nationwide standard for lease agreements, give renters a clear history of apartment pricing so they can bargain fairly and make sure they have more agency.”

This is part of three new reforms that will “make the playing field fairer for renters” amid an affordability crisis making homeownership out of reach for many.

The PM added the bill includes “legal aid fund that protects tenants from unfairly rising rents, rent evictions and bad landlords.”

In addition, prospective home buyers can use their renting history towards qualifying for a mortgage or even qualifying at a lower rate.

The 2024 budget is set to be unveiled in the House of Commons by Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on April 16.
