Sadler's ballad is not for everybody. But it holds a place in the history of recorded music. It was a rarity even in 1966 to see a patriotic song, about war, fighting and the military, at No. 1 on the pop charts.

When I first started listening to KPUG in Bellingham, WA in the winter of 1966, this was the #1 song in the country. "The Ballad of the Green Berets" topped the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks and, for four weeks, it was No. 1 on the Cashbox magazine charts. The song came out prior to the U.S. public having soured on the war in Vietnam. The patriotic slant made it a verifiable crossover smash: No. 1 on Billboard's Easy Listening chart and No. 2 on Billboard's Country survey. The final Billboard year end chart for 1966 had "Berets" at No. 1.

The song was written and performed by the late Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler, who was a real life Green Beret. He performed his chart topping ballad on many TV shows, from Ed Sullivan to the Jimmy Dean show. This performance (with an improved soundtrack) was from the Jimmy Dean show, dated February 1966. Sadler led an interesting but tragic life: an author, soldier of fortune, prison inmate, and an early death by firearm in Guatemala. I wrote a story on Barry Sadler's life and his early death over at Puget Sound Media: https://pugetsound.media/2018/11/11/f...
