The Penn State Methodology Center, in collaboration with Columbia University's School of Social Work, organized a two-day meeting of leading experts in HIV prevention and experts in methods for engineering better behavioral interventions on September 12 and13 in Bethesda, Maryland.

Rick Altice, Yale University: Keynote Address
"HIV Prevention and Treatment: Optimizing Biomedical and Behavioral Treatments to Achieve the National HIV/AIDS Strategy Goals"

Dr. Altice presented an overview of the state of HIV in the US and globally. He focused his discussion on individuals in the criminal justice system, as well as on the role of drug addiction in HIV infection and treatment. Dr. Altice discussed acute HIV infection, and conundrums related to this including how frequent and who should be tested, implications for counseling and testing, and the benefit of immediate antiretroviral therapy to reduce HIV transmissions.
