About Lake Tarawera,
This deep, clear lake nestled in the heart of New Zealand is renowned for its exceptional water quality year-round, making it a prime spot for recreational activities.

Lake Tarawera, with an average depth of 50 meters, offers an array of fishing opportunities, particularly for rainbow trout. These trout flourish in the lake, rapidly growing to an average size of 2.5 kilograms, with some even reaching a hefty 4 kilograms or more. Interestingly, the trout from Lake Tarawera are used to stock many other lakes in the Rotorua region.

Approximately 65% of the lake's catch comprises fish bred in a hatchery during their first year. The rest of the catch is made up of fish from wild spawns. The trout thrive on the plentiful populations of smelt, bullies, koura, and aquatic insects present in the lake, contributing to their rapid growth rates.

Fishing at Lake Tarawera is a unique experience due to the seasonal changes. Trout spawn from May to September in the lake's tributaries and outlet, with some of the hatchery-bred trout returning to their release sites on the shoreline.

The lake is not just about fishing; it's also about exploring and adventuring. With a range of boat ramps around the lake, visitors can enjoy easy access to the water. The ramps have various facilities, including jetties, toilets, and even playgrounds. Some areas offer a sheltered launching point, while others provide stunning swimming and picnic spots.

Whether you're a seasoned angler or a casual tourist, Lake Tarawera offers a memorable experience. So come and explore the crystal clear waters, reel in a big catch, and soak in the tranquil surroundings of this beautiful lake.

** Tagging Trout NZ
Trout tagging in New Zealand is a specific type of fish tagging program that focuses on monitoring and managing trout populations

Trout tagging programs typically involve marking individual trout with small plastic or metal tags that contain unique identification numbers. These tags are attached to the fish in a way that minimizes any potential harm or interference with their natural behaviour. Tagged trout are often released back into their habitat, allowing them to continue their normal activities.

Anglers who catch a tagged trout are encouraged to report the tag number, catch location, and other relevant details to the responsible organization. This information helps researchers and fisheries managers gain insights into trout movements, population dynamics, growth rates, and survival rates. It can also provide data on angling pressure, catch rates, and the effectiveness of fisheries management strategies.
