There is no way to describe the beauty that is west of Denver when the colors are changing. As great as the colors in this video turned out, it doesn't due the reality justice. All of the videos were shot on one of my new favorite roads. Highway 24 which heads south from Avon/Vail, winding down through the fantastic little town of Minturn, across the amazing trestle in Red Cliff, past the massive and abandoned WWII Mountain Army Training Base of Camp Hale, and ending up in the beautiful old silver mining (and highest city in the US at over 10,000 feet) of Leadville.
Just east of Leadville is hundreds of square miles of abandoned mines and towns which is the ones we were driving around when we were on the gravel paths and roads. The aqueduct and the large abandoned mine are easily visible from 24 about 10-20 minutes south of I70 and this entire trip from Vail and the interstate all the way down to Leadville is only about an hour.
Truly an amazing place and completely surreal topography and history. Can't wait to go back.
