Actual SUV/crossover sales volume dipped 8 per cent from 2021 levels as the global automotive industry’s supply struggles lingered and worsened over the course of the year. Yet while the Canadian market for passenger cars decreased at a remarkably sharp rate — just under 16 per cent of the new vehicles sold in the fourth-quarter were cars — utility vehicles moved in on even more previously car-claimed territory.

Most of 2022’s finalists (Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Kona, etc.) were present on 2021’s list of Canada’s best-selling SUVs. Only the Toyota Highlander (2022’s 11th-ranked SUV) and Subaru Crosstrek (now 13th) were knocked out of the top 10.
