Close up views of the American Falls, the Horseshoe Falls, and the Niagara Ice Bridge, as seen on Feb.6, 2015. This Ice Bridge was formed on Jan.11, 2015 and has remained frozen here since then, making this Day 27 of its existence. (Note also, that the Niagara River CONTINUES to flow under the ice bridge - it is NOT frozen solid, neither above nor below the falls.)
The waterfall seen at the very right (at 00:57) is usually lumped in as being part of the American Falls, but it is actually named the Bridal Veil Falls. To the left of the Bridal Veil Falls is Luna Island; to the right is Goat Island. Every winter, there is always an impressive and intricate ice formation which develops on the cliff face of Luna Island, caused when the spray mist coming off the surrounding falls freezes onto the rock. (Same thing also happens along the cliff face of Goat Island, at Terrapin Point, on the U.S.-side of the Horseshoe Falls, as well as by Table Rock on the Canadian side. Depending on which way the wind is blowing, that mist will freeze onto anything in the area, on either side of the river!!)
In 2014, for example, many people were conned into believing that "Niagara Falls had frozen", and were quick to blame "climate-change", "global-warming", and the "polar vortex" {...Sadly, this urban myth is being repeated again, in 2015! Update: STILL in 2021, media were spreading the same disinformation!!!} Many photos and videos deceptively showed Luna Island's typical winter ice-covered cliff-face as being the "frozen falls", when in fact, river water NEVER flows there - it is just a bare rock-face cliff! As can be clearly seen in this video, the Niagara River flows on both sides of Luna Island, and it is the cliff-face in-between which has the beautiful layered ice formation - as has been the case over hundreds of years.
The Bridal Veil Falls have also been known as the Luna Falls; and, as the Hermit's Falls, after the storied 'hermit' Francis Abbott, who "moved in" to what is today known as Goat Island from 1829 to 1831, early in the Augustus Porter era. Originally named Goat Island after John Stedman's goat herd in the late 1770's, Porter had changed the name to Iris Island, so today's Bridal Veil Falls were also once known as the Iris Falls.

Some media {now...} do clarify that in fact the falls are not frozen solid, but you get the point: ignorant media in general spike their stories with disinformation purporting to their gullible readers that the falls are frozen solid, and, that this never happened before!
Even in 2021, they STILL do it, like clockwork, every Jan/Feb when a cold snap sets in, predictably peddling the "falls are frozen" hoax.
