I went into prison as a coach in the morning and afterwards I went home grabbed my bike and headed to the hills. I went into prison to sit down with some inmates who have served some long sentences and are about to parole in the next year. This voluntary program they have enrolled in is set up to help them transition to the real world and hopefully help them obtain a job. As a former gang member, inmate and now successful entrepreneur I went in as a coach. My goal was to give them hope and show them that they can be successful, responsible and hopefully walk away from their gang life and become a positive contributing member of their community. I sat down with many inmates going over their resumes, giving feedback and helping them set goals for their future. It was a very emotional experience. My brother is employed with the non profit and one of the main people running this program, he was also a former gang member and has spent 22 years of his life behind bars.
After leaving the program I was overwhelmed with emotion so I just wanted to get on the bike and clear my head. Luckily Luis and Noah were available to ride so we hit up Santiago Oaks. It was a fun ride and definitely something I needed. I was on limited time because I had to get my daughter to volleyball practice. We hit Yucca, Hawk, Chutes and Waterfall. I took the Yeti so pedaling was rough but surprisingly I was able to survive. I was actually on a 2 day fast so I was worried I would bonk but I made the whole ride without walking any parts of the climb or cramping up.
