The Volvo XC40 has been selling in big numbers for the Swedish brand, outselling all its rivals other than the Audi Q3 in the VFACTS small SUV market segment for vehicles priced above $40,000.

Introduced here in 2018 with diesel and petrol powertrain options, the XC40 went on to win the carsales Car of the Year award the same year. By 2021, the diesels had been dropped and a plug-in hybrid model had joined the range.

The latest variant is the fully electric Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, a vehicle priced at $76,990, which is $190 more than the Mercedes-Benz EQA 250.

Volvo’s pricing is aggressive, but also allows for the XC40’s all-wheel drive system, as opposed to the front-wheel drive powertrain of the EQA. With the two motors producing 150kW each, or 300kW combined – with a torque figure of 660Nm – the XC40 can reach 100km/h from a standing start in under five seconds, Volvo claims.

Its 78kWh battery sits out of the way under the floor and stores enough charge for a 418km range. Ken Gratton investigates how that translates in the real world.
