We’ve all heard a great deal about people wanting to put a colony on Mars, and the virtues of such an idea. The problem is that Mars is seldom close to Earth. It’s only a reasonable distance about every two years as our planets spin around the Sun.
What do you do if some Martian gets a toothache? How about a swollen or ruptured appendix? Sure, you would send a surgeon and a dentist along on the trip, but you’d need at least two in case a dentist needed a dentist, or the doctor needed a surgeon, right? But if one doctor or dentist died, the other would have no recourse and the entire colony might become dependent on keeping that one person alive more than any other. It’s beyond risky—it’s downright dangerous to the whole colony
