Dr. Giles has a PhD in Biology from UNC Charlotte, an MS degree in Wood and Paper Science (Forest Biomaterials) from North Carolina State University, an MBA in Financial Management from North Carolina State University, and over 15 years of experience as an academic and professional for the microbiology and forest products industries. In addition to being a college microbiology, molecular biology, and biotechnology professor, he is an active industry expert in microbial pretreatments for lignocellulosic ethanol, industrial microbiology, and biomass characterization. He has developed several novel biotechnologies including transgenics for increased fungal enzyme production, innovative lignocellulosic ethanol production techniques, microbial methods of bioremediation, and bioprospecting microbes for biotechnology. Dr. Giles has worked in the selection, culturing, and scale-up of fungi for alternative proteins, pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, and various fungal derived products. He has done chemical & market evaluations of cellulosic ethanol feedstocks and processes, and evaluation and feasibility studies of genetically modified organisms (plant, fungal, and bacterial). He has conducted plant pathogen investigations and abatement for agriculture, cannabis, and wood Products, and conducts technical feasibility, selection, and design of microbial processes (e.g., enzyme production, bacterial culturing, fermentation, bioreactors, algae).
