Just before midday on October 15 1970, a 2,000 tonne span of the partially completed West Gate Bridge collapsed into the Yarra River below. This horrifying incident cost the lives of 35 men and injured many more.

The disaster proved to be a turning point for increased health and safety in Victoria’s workplaces.
