An open acoustic design(s) of the head is called such a design in which the back side of the sound-emitting surface of the head diffuser is not acoustically isolated from the front. As an open design, a box is used, usually having the shape of a parallelepiped, with a perforated back wall or with its complete absence.

The most common type of open acoustic design is a box in which the back wall has a number of through holes or is completely absent. The head is usually mounted on the front panel of the drawer. Its internal volume is usually used to accommodate parts of an electrical circuit, such as a radio receiver. Remote speakers in the form of open enclosures are used less often. The acoustic action of an open design is similar to the action of a screen. The front wall, i.e. the one on which the head is mounted, has the greatest influence on the frequency response of the speaker system with an open design.
