Sarah walks you through what a CDN (Content Delivery Network) is, what caching is, and how they are different. She also discusses why site speed plugins may be slowing your site down and what types of caching rules will make your site faster.

CDNs act as extensions to the server your website uses. Proxy servers are set all over the world that holds the most-updated version of your website. Instead of a user having to wait for the request and response from your server all the way back to their computer, the request will be sent to the nearest proxy server and the user will get the response more quickly.

Caching is the process in which that information is gathered to store on the proxy servers. There are two types of caching: page caching and browser caching.

Page caching, which can also be called HTTP or site caching, stores data like images, web pages, and other content temporarily when it’s loaded for the first time. This data is stored in an unused portion of RAM and has no significant impact on memory. Then, when a visitor returns, part of that website is actually pulled from where it is stored on their computer's RAM and the rest is collected from the proxy server.

Browser caching allows particular web pages to load really fast. Instead of requesting and sending the required data that is needed to display the webpage on your browser, it’s stored on your computer. Browser caching is also a type of page caching.

This way, if somebody has visited your website before on a browser, and they can be cookied. The rule you can set is, “if the content hasn’t changed, show the visitor the same version of the site they saw before.”

When caching, it is important to set particular rules so that your content and website are properly cached and served.
