A French drain is a type of drainage system designed to redirect water away from a particular area. It consists of a trench filled with gravel or rock, with a perforated pipe running through the middle, which allows water to drain away from the surrounding soil.

Here are the steps to make a French drain:

Choose the location where you want to install the French drain. Identify the area where water is pooling, and determine where you want the water to drain to.
Dig a trench in the chosen location. The trench should be deep enough to accommodate the pipe and the gravel, usually between 6 to 12 inches wide and 18 to 24 inches deep.
Add a layer of geotextile non-woven fabric to the bottom and sides of the trench. This will prevent soil and other debris from clogging the gravel and the pipe, allowing water to flow freely.
Lay the perforated pipe in the trench. The perforated side of the pipe should be facing downwards to allow water to enter the pipe. The pipe should be sloped downwards at a rate of at least 1/8 inch per foot to ensure proper drainage.
Wrap the pipe with geotextile non-woven fabric, creating a "burrito" with the fabric and the pipe. This will prevent soil and debris from entering the pipe, ensuring that it functions properly.
Add a layer of gravel or rock to cover the pipe and fill the trench. The gravel should be at least 2 to 3 inches above the top of the pipe.
Fold the excess fabric over the top of the gravel layer, and then cover it with soil or sod. This will create a seamless look for your French drain.
Test your French drain by running water through it. Check to make sure that the water is flowing freely through the pipe and draining away from the desired area.
By following these steps and including the geotextile non-woven fabric in your French drain, you can ensure that your drainage system will function properly for years to come.
