In this Our Changing Climate climate change video essay, I look at why these tipping points are code red for our planet and how the climate crisis and capitalism are driving us closer to the edge. Specifically, I look at climate tipping points like the Amazon rainforest dieback and the melting of the permafrost in order to grasp what exactly is at stake if we don't act now on climate change and the climate crisis. The Amazon rainforest dieback tipping point is currently being driven by Amazon rainforest deforestation and climate change-driven extreme heat. and wildfires. If left unchecked, climate change and deforestation could mean an irreversible die-off of the Amazon rainforest. Another tipping point of consequence is the melting of the permafrost. Permafrost melt creates a positive feedback look and could potentially release hundreds of billions of tons of CO2 and methane into the air, further warming the climate. Tipping points then show us that action needs to be taken right now or else irreversible consequences will soon arrive.
