The biggest news for the 2022 Toyota Tacoma is the SR5 Trail Edition. If you don’t have the doubloons to buy a TRD Off-Road or Pro then this might just be the Tacoma for you.

This Trail Edition gets a couple of features that will really help you off road. Extra ground clearance in front and rear and a locking rear differential for when things get slippery.

No, that’s not the rock crunching juggernaut TRD Pro list of features but you’ve also got a more respectable price at around $50,000. The Trail Edition is only available as a 4x4. But maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s do a quick Tacoma recap for a second.

Fuel economy numbers aren’t slaying dragons, but the four-cylinder mill does decently.

(4-cyl RWD: 20 city/23 hwy). If you opt for the 4WD lose a mile off those numbers. (V6 RWD: 19 city/24 hwy; 4WD 18 city/22 hwy) You’ll sacrifice another digit on those V6 4WD numbers if you opt for the manual.

Pricing on the Tacoma starts at $26,500. Add on 4WD for $3,075. The RWD V6 goes up by $2,260 and 4WD on top of that is $3,465. Upgrading to the Double Cab adds $830.

Standard content includes 16-inch steel wheels, a limited-slip differential, skid plates, fabric seats, and heated power outboard mirrors. Other features are hill-start assist, a tilt-telescopic steering wheel, a sliding rear window, and dual-zone auto climate control. And an easy lower tailgate. Uh, it might be easy lower, however….

The infotainment system has a 7-inch touchscreen, a 6-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, satellite-radio capability, and three USB ports. Standard driver aids are forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam assist. You can add remote keyless entry for $230 and a tonneau cover for $650.

You’ll also get some composite storage that’s durable and locking. These storage boxes are really great, and hey, someone left their trash in here for me. All right. Thanks.

Over the years of this generation Toyota have made some big upgrades to seat comfort and adjustment, general cabin set up and tech. But materials still tend to the less zazzy plastics.

Tacoma still comes with Toyota’s 6-speed automatic gearbox. Like the rest of the Tacoma it’s not terribly refined, but like the rest of the Tacoma let’s assume something else is coming.

If you’re looking at the SR5 that starts around $29,200. With that you can get the V6 or opt for 4WD. And you get the larger, okay slightly larger 8-inch touchscreen.

The SR5 also includes that all-new 4WD Trail Edition ($3,765), which gets you the off-road goodies I mentioned earlier plus, full skid plates, and bronze-finished wheels.

The highest of non-TRD trims is the Limited (Base Price: ~$39,300) which adds 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, a power moonroof, and the premium JBL audio system.

That gets us into the TRD line up, which will always be indicated by specific badging and even if you just get the TRD Sport, you’re going to look more aggressive. And you’re going to pay close to $33,500, that’s without 4WD or the Double Cab. Add a little less that $7000 smackers for those. You do get wireless phone charging standard though, which is good.

The TRD Off-Road (Graphic: Base Price: ~$34,700) adds some real features to help you off-road including Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control, an electronic locking rear differential, and an off-road suspension.

At the top of the Tacoma food chain stands the TRD Pro (Graphic: Base Price: ~$50,000). That base price gets you a manual transmission and the double cab. You also get 16-inch black alloy wheels, extra ground clearance, a front skid plate, heated front seats, and TRD interior accents. Fox-branded shock absorbers and a TRD cat-back exhaust also come standard.

Yes, it’s old, but it’s still reliable, and there are tons of aftermarket parts to make of it what you want. Put it at the top of your list if you’re looking for a reliable truck. And like us, hold your breath and wait for the brand new one to come.
