Aortic stenosis is a cardiovascular condition characterised by the narrowing of the aortic valve opening, restricting the flow of blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Dr Suraj Narasimhan A, Consultant Cardiology, Adult at Narayana Health City, Bommasandra, Bengaluru, talks about the risk factors associated with aortic stenosis:
1. Age- Aortic stenosis mainly affects older people because calcium can build up in the heart valve over time.
2. Rheumatic Fever- This is a childhood illness that can lead to valve problems later in life, including aortic stenosis.
3. Lifestyle- Diabetes, high cholesterol, and smoking increase the risk of developing aortic stenosis.
4. Prior Chest Radiation- Patients who have undergone radiation therapy for cancer, especially in the chest area, have a higher risk of developing aortic stenosis later on.
5. Birth Defects- Some people are born with abnormal heart valves, such as having only two or one cusps instead of the usual three in the aortic valve. These defects increase the risk of aortic stenosis, often at a younger age.
Understanding these risk factors can help identify and manage aortic stenosis early on, potentially preventing complications.
