On Sunday 17th September 1989,91010 undertook a series of high speed test runs on the East Coast Mainline between Grantham and Peterborough.The runs took place between. 6.00 and 9.00 a.m when there were no other services on the route.
The train was formed of five MKIV coaches and a DVT,with 91010 on the north end.
There were three southbound runs and two northbound.On the final southbound run the train reached a speed of 161.7mph around milepost 87.5,near to Essendine.
This film shows the train at Grantham on the evening before the tests,on the second southbound run just north of Essendine,the second northbound run at Greatford level crossing and the final southbound run at milepost 85 where the train was travelling at around 155mph.
