You get what you pay for right? Well when it comes to the gorgeous BMW 840i convertible, you get a lot.

It's one of the most beautiful coupes ever made, a pure classic. The 8 series is the BMW flagship of the '90s - exceptionally designed, sporty and elegant combined with modern high tech features. It hit the market in 1989. Back then, the 8 series made 380 Hp and the most successful German 12-cylinder coupe ever. It was also among one of BMW's first cars to use a multi-link rear axle; the first road car to offer a V12 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. This was also one of the first vehicles to be fitted with electronic drive-by-wire throttle. It was the first BMW to offer dynamic stability control. The unusual shape is due to a great technical goal of achieving a drag coefficient less than 0.3 other implementations include the recessed windshield wipers.
Today, the M 850i X-Drive gets a great big 4.4-liter bi-turbo V8 that churns out 523 horsepower, 553 lb-ft torque using the awesome ZF eight-speed automatic gearbox. It has the eco, pro-sport, and dynamic drive modes.
The 840i is the only model in the range to feature a rear-wheel drivetrain.
The 840i xDrive hit 0-60 in just 3.8 seconds. The 8 Series Convertible feels light and nimble. focused once again on the chassis to convey an exemplary driving experience. The secret to the 8 Series' handling is the steering.
The M850i, which gets M Performance brakes, suspension, and a locking rear differential, sharpening handling and responsiveness. It achieves 22-29 MPG which is pretty good for such a big engine.

The shark-like design is undeniable. That standard BMW design traits remain like the slender kidney grilles. The headlights are the slimmest ever installed on a BMW, giving the 8 Series the impression of being even wider than it is.
M850i models receive the M Sport Package as standard - an option on the 840i - which gives the 8 Series more aggressive front and rear bumpers, a rear spoiler, and darkened exterior trim where chrome would usually reside.
The interior is stylish, sleek, and purely functional.
The interior dash is streamlined, sporty and luxurious. It lights up at night, illuminating a stylish interior - check out that blue is glow under the steering wheel. High tech through and through. At night the illumination brings everything to life. Every element of the driver and passenger compartment is transformed into a classy night space that sets a vibe.
The driver modes are settings that enhance performance of the vehicle. Behind that is a dual door storage area to keep your whatnots inside and also places to recharge your cell phone or iPad. Beneath the - on the right passenger side of course is the glove compartment area The doors are stylish and streamlined with chrome accents and leather trimming. At the bottom of the doors are more storage space for your beverage and other items. Underneath you have the stainless steel resting pad for your feet and of course the brake and gas pedal.
The seats are absolutely sporty and comfortable. There's an extension right under the thigh area that allows you to have extra padding as you drive and the seats can be maneuvered any way you want, especially when you're out to make that driving experience all the better. BMW understands how to make seats for pure drivers that's for sure. The two front occupants are graciously accommodated with an abundance of head and legroom, and ample levels of adjustability. Merino leather upholstery of the 8 Series isn't luxurious, or the heated - 14-way power-adjustable sports seats,
The back seats are comfortable too, with space for two comfortably but don't try to get someone in there that's over six three. Forget about it.
Just 29.5 inches of legroom is all the rear occupants get - four-seater capabilities, but I preferred to keep the passenger list to two
Infotainment.
At the heart of every 8 Series Convertible is a 10.25-inch touchscreen display catering to infotainment needs. It features the latest iDrive 7 software and multiple means of control including touch control, operation via the iDrive rotary controller - now with haptic feedback - gesture control and cloud-based voice control. The system combines standard AM/FM/CD/SiriusXM satellite radio functionality with USB and Bluetooth inputs, as well as Apple CarPlay with a one-year free trial, but no Android Auto.
Navigation and a WiFi hotspot are included as standard, the latter for three months, and a range of connected apps ensures that real-time traffic information, parking availability, hazard previews and more are all beamed straight to the car. Audio is delivered through to a 408-watt Harman Kardon surround sound system with 12 speakers.
Closing Thoughts
With an MSRP OF $97,400 the 8 Series is up against stiff competition from exotic manufacturers. It manages all the things BMW is good at exceptionally well. The 8 Series Convertible is an incredible asset for BMW.
