The Billion Readers BIRD Initiative formerly known as the Same Language Subtitling (SLS) project, was conceived by the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and PlanetRead. SLS has been implemented in several multi-year TV pilot studies in ten Indian languages (2002-present). This has led to a national policy mandating SLS on 50% of all entertainment programming on TV in India, by 2025.
