The M2 is easy to love, and the F80 M3 is easy to hate...But that doesn't represent the bulk of BMW sales (unfortunately that trophy goes to SUV's). So when BMW brought along the option to have the 2 series in a purist spec, I was really excited. Naturally I jumped at the chance to drive the M235i. I drove it in Manual/RWD and Auto/Xdrive. I felt like the car was nervous, and more nose heavy than I expected. So how could the 228i be better? It turns out I had a lot more fun driving the 228i X-drive because it felt more nimble and planted. It doesn't have the steering feel that BMW's of "my day" once had, but it made sense and felt the way it looked. Yesterday I got the opportunity to drive the RWD, Manual, Track package 228i. I've got to say I really enjoyed it. The smaller N20 may not be as powerful as its N55 brother, but it feels like it's always ready when I want it. Anyway the moral of the story is that BMW has really been a bummer to me lately... and then I drove this, and it gives me hope. They aren't at the top of their class...But I'm glad we can still get small "light" rwd manual cars for daily use.
