I first visited New York in February 1997 when I was 13 years old. My parents booked us a holiday as a Christmas present.

Going to New York was a dream trip. I was like Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone 2 (I even had a Talkboy). Growing up seeing the city in so many films and TV shows, I remember feeling it was already so familiar when we arrived - almost like gaining behind the scenes access to a film set of your favourite movie.

I was in awe and absolutely loved everything about the city, with the trip exceeding all my expectations...

Fast forward, and I've been back to New York several times since, visiting briefly in 2004 when I spent a summer working in America; in 2014 when I returned to run the New York City marathon and most recently in February 2024.

Each time I've returned, I've still felt the magic of the city like I did when I was 13 and recently had the footage our family friend captured on that first trip converted from VHS to digital.

With my Leica M6 in hand, I thought it would be fun to retrace the footsteps of my first New York experience and create an edit, combining the old footage from the past with the new film photography of the present, in a nostalgic trip back to the late 90's.

This is New York, then and now...
