If you’ve ever been to a car show, you know it’s pretty impressive when you walk in. There are hundreds of vehicles, all spotless and shined; they’re all in neat rows, and they’re in displays that can include professionally-made signs, lights, auto memorabilia, mirrors, and more. It’s almost overwhelming — but have you ever wondered what it takes to put it all together?

To find out, Driving's Jil McIntosh went to setup day for the 2024 Toronto Motorama Custom Car & Motorsports Expo, which opens to the public on March 8, 9, and 10, 2024 at the International Centre on Airport Road in Mississauga, Ontario. It takes a day to go from an empty building to what spectators will see when some 400 vehicles are on display, and Jil was there when the doors opened at 7 a.m. — along with her 1949 Studebaker pickup truck, which was part of the show.
