Speaker: Professor Marek Kuś (Polish Academy of Sciences)

Date: 3rd Apr 2024 - 10:40 to 11:30
Venue: INI Seminar Room 1
Title: Art and topology
Event: (OOEW05) Space, Scale and Scaling in Art

Abstract: I will demonstrate the application of Topological Data Analysis (TDA) methods in elucidating the characteristics of abstract artworks. TDA offers valuable tools for analysis derived from algebraic topology, notably homology theory. In simple terms, I will outline elements of image analysis through a topological lens, including filtering and persistence.
Furthermore, I will conduct a comparative analysis between the outcomes yielded by TDA and those from other image analysis methodologies grounded in statistical approaches.
The results of Topological Data Analysis allow not only for the characterization of the "complexity" of the images but can also be used to analyse the viewers' viewing patterns.
