US and Philippines started their largest combat drill on April 22 near the disputed South China Sea that has alarmed Beijing. The annual military exercise by the longtime allies will end on May 10 and involve nearly 17,000 military personnel. As part of the annual Balikatan or "shoulder-to-shoulder" drills, the Philippines and US forces will sink a target ship, retake an island and sail in the South China Sea.
