How long can a creditor collect an old debt?

The answer depends on the type of collection activity:

1. A creditor can file a lawsuit within the "statute of limitations" -- which here in FL, is generally ๐Ÿฐ-๐Ÿฑ ๐˜†๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜€ from the date of your last payment (unless a different state law applies in your cardholder agreement).

2. A creditor can report information to the credit reporting agencies for ๐Ÿณ ๐˜†๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜€ from the date of your last payment.

3. A creditor can informally contact you by letters, calls, etc. to collect a debt ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—น๐˜† but, if applicable, must also inform you that the debt is outside the statute of limitations.

If you're receiving informal collection communications by letters, calls, etc., ๐—ฑ๐—ผ ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ ๐˜๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฑ๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฏ๐˜ ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ ๐˜„๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐˜† the debt because that can re-start the statute of limitations.
