Task Force Normandy was the mission that started operation Desert Storm. The objective was to destroy a pair of Iraqi early warning radars, opening a corridor 20 miles wide for coalition aircraft on the way to Baghdad. The strike team consisted of a dozen of helicopters, eight Apaches with a ninht as a backup, a csar Uh60 and two MH53 pave low featuring terrain following and GPS systems. The Apaches didn't have GPS for navigation at that time, so the Pave low's were there to provide accurate navigation data and the correct coordinates, so the Apaches could land on the desert to fix the INS drift due to the long distance travelled.
At 02:38 a.m on Jan 17, 1991, the Apache pilot said on the radio "Party in 10" meaning 10 seconds for all eight Apaches to fire the Hellfire missiles against the early warning radar site installations. The Apaches had expended 27 Hellfire missiles, 100 Hydra-70 rockets and 4000 rounds of 30mm, leaving the radar site completely destroyed.
On the way back, the Apache pilots could see a big metal swarm. These were the coalition aircraft flying at low altitude through the open corridor. The Gulf War had just started.
