Fruit of the work of a curious and intrepid young journalist, this documentary relates, in a Syria in the grip of a terrible civil war, the daily life of the inhabitants of Aleppo, the country's second city. Chronicle of a conflict through the eyes of those who participate in it or who suffer from it. After a first stay in Aleppo last January, during which she really took the pulse of the city by filming its inhabitants in their daily life, Camille Courcy returned there in April for the purposes of this documentary broadcast in this issue du Monde en face devoted to Syria.
From the outset, the young 22-year-old journalist chose to follow the rebels of Aleppo, those from the so-called “liberated” areas. Former bakers, taxi drivers, engineers, professors and even lawyers, the regime's opponents are for the most part improvised fighters, without any military experience.
Men, but also women who learn as best they can to handle weapons and rockets, to make themselves useful in this “artisanal” revolution. Accompanied by a translator, the director thus gives voice to anonymous citizens, who, although they do not share the same dreams for the future, have all stood up to bring down the dictatorial power in place, embodied by Bachar al -Assad.
From Nour, the “sniper” woman who chose to follow her husband to the front line, to Zacharia, who left everything to participate in the revolution, including little Abu Oudaheh, whose exceptional voice galvanizes the crowd during of the weekly Friday demonstration, everyone talks about their war.
In her film, Camille Courcy composes a mosaic of portraits of rebellious Syrians which reveals their humanity, their plurality, their fears and even their few joys. It thus shows, day by day, a conflict which seems to drag on forever.
