Celebrating its world premiere today at the Frieze Los Angeles art fair, the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA gets its name after Mahlangu’s first son. The animated exterior uses no fewer than 1,349 sections of individually controllable film (e-ink).

In this video, Stella Clarke, the BMW engineers responsible for the BMW i5 Flow project shares with us the story behind this unique car. The electric sedan echoes the 525i E34 designed by Esther Mahlangu in 1991 when she became the first woman and African artist to work on an official BMW Art Car.
