For more than 140 years, Damascus, Syria, has been home to renowned luthiers making exquisite instruments that set the standard for the entire Arab region. The Nahat family was the most famous of these dynasties, with a lasting reputation for making the best and most beautiful Arabic ouds of the twentieth century.

In this clip, enjoy oud music presented and played by Viken Najarian. This oud, made around 1907, is elegantly sculptured and features the Nahat brothers’ highly refined, signature rosette in the center of its body.
