Audi has thoroughly updated its flagship electric SUV for the 2024 model year, renaming it the Q8 e-tron and Q8 e-tron Sportback. We had the chance to drive the sleek Sportback variant and came away impressed with Audi's ability to merge luxury and electrification.

Sporty Style, Familiar Design
At a quick glance, the Q8 e-tron Sportback doesn't look radically different from Audi's other SUV offerings. The updates for 2024 are subtle, comprising a revised front grille, new light signatures, and tweaked wheel designs. The Sportback retains its rakish, coupe-like roofline that gives it a sportier, more dynamic profile compared to the standard Q8 e-tron.

The changes are more substantial underneath the sheet metal. Replacing the old 95 kWh battery is a larger 106 kWh pack, which boosts the Sportback's EPA-estimated range to an impressive 300 miles with the optional aero-optimized Ultra package. Feeding the battery pack is an exclusive 170 kW DC fast charging capability.

Instant Acceleration, Luxury Refinement
Like other EVs, the Q8 e-tron Sportback delivers brisk acceleration thanks to its dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 402 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque. Audi claims a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds, putting it mid-pack among high-end electric SUVs. The immediate torque delivery provides more than enough thrust for passing and merging.

Where the Audi truly shines, though, is in its luxury experience and premium cabin atmosphere. The interior is a masterclass of high-end design and material quality, with an elegant blend of leather, wood, metal, and digital displays. An optional Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system further enhances the serene driving experience.

While rapid, the Q8 e-tron Sportback's acceleration doesn't feel as violently quick as a Tesla Model X or even the new Lotus Eletre. This more laid-back power delivery suits the Audi's grand touring personality. Meanwhile, the air suspension provides an impeccably smooth ride befitting a large luxury SUV.

Strong Points and Shortcomings
The 2024 Audi Q8 e-tron Sportback makes a compelling case for luxury SUV buyers looking to go electric without sacrificing premium amenities or driving range. Its cabin remains a standout in the segment, and even the entry-level Premium trim is very well-equipped.

However, performance enthusiasts seeking maximum thrills may find the Sportback a bit too subdued for their tastes compared to some rivals. Those seeking absolute driving range may also be let down, as the Sportback's 300 mile maximum range estimate lags behind the segment leaders.

Overall though, the Q8 e-tron Sportback makes a strong statement that Audi's expertise in luxury extends beyond just internal combustion vehicles. For many buyers prioritizing a premium experience and design over ultimate performance, this stylish electric SUV could be a perfect fit.
