⚡Welcome to #Enertea: The COP27 Recap Edition! This is a 3-part series where we’ll talk about the big topics at COP27: fossil fuels, loss and damage, and finally, what’s next? ️

First up: FOSSIL FUELS

Last year, the Glasgow Climate Pact made a commitment to “phase down unabated coal power” - “unabated” referring to fossil fuel use that isn’t paired with carbon capture and storage. This was the first time fossil fuels were actually mentioned in the final text - they’re not even mentioned in the Paris Agreement. Unfortunately, no further progress was made on this front at COP27, despite some countries pushing for a phaseout of ALL fossil fuels, not just unabated fossil fuels. Instead, we landed with some loophole-filled language on “low emission and renewable energy”, and promises to update national commitments before COP28. This is the reason why many scientists and activists find each annual COP frustrating.

➡️ What do you think we can do to change this trajectory? Let us know what you think in the comments.

And next up, we’ll talk Loss and Damage - which some are calling one of the big wins of COP27.
