Among the greatest feats of engineering, the Panama Canal opened in 1914.
Running basically north-south, this corridor links the two largest oceans and transits around 5% of all world trade.
Construction of the canal, in all its incarnations, cost over 30 000 lives.
BTW - I say the French attempt to build was is the 1860’s, whereas it began in 1879.
Panama is a small, neutral country. Obviously an isthmus, Panama was formed by volcanos and the rock are very hard and stable.
The #canal requires rain for the lock system to work - although the newer locks do have some water recycling. Climate change will further affect the canal.
