NASA'S ARTEMIS 1 MISSION, An In-Depth Look at the Space Launch System, with William Whittenbury. NASA's Artemis I mission from November- December 2022 marked the first time a spacecraft designed to carry a crew has visited the moon since 1972. This historic test mission paved the way for future crewed exploration of Earth's nearest neighbor, in a more comprehensive and sustainable program than Apollo with growth potential to eventual Mars missions. Artemis I was enabled by NASA's new Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, the most powerful operational launch vehicle ever built. This talk will give audiences an in-depth look at the design and development of this new rocket, including its design antecedents, a detailed technical description, the manufacturing process, testing, and the ultimate launch campaign and Artemis I mission. The talk will also look ahead to what's next in this exciting exploration program, including the Artemis II crew mission and upcoming vehicles for the program including the SLS Block IB, Human Landing System (HLS), and Lunar Gateway space station. The speaker will share his personal experiences supporting the program in 2018
