ABOUT THIS VIDEO:
He is a drummer, leader, and a composer but which element shows off Manu Katché’s work the most? His image remains blurred despite significant media presence (he’s on the panel for the programme Nouvelle Star on M6, and on One Shot Not on Arte) and has continued support from the ECM label. This drummer is so exceptional without ever being pretentious, we clearly see why he is a sought after sideman by both English artists (Peter Gabriel, Sting) as well as by jazz musicians (Marcus Miller, Jan Garbarek, L. Shankar, Al Di Meola). He is also obviously a leader, having always known how to choose major partners for his various creations (the Polish Marcin Wasilewski, the Scandinavians Jan Garbarek, Trygve Seim, Mathias Eick etc.). The composer’s craft is less easy to grasp. For this concert, representative of his latest album, he favours futuristic vibes and strange hidden structures without losing sight of melodies and percussive salience.

Manu Katché openly gives his audience the key to his philosophy and his craftsmanship: “It’s a new project, of new pieces. It is important to keep recording albums; they will be like the old yellowed photos that our grandparents talked to us about: we must leave a legacy for the younger generations.” He goes on to introduce the young keyboard player Jim Henderson: “He was the record producer on the ScOpe album: he worked on the sound and direction, with me and on my compositions, which led me down paths that I hadn’t yet been down.” The audience approves.
