Elon Musk says he's confident Tesla will be full autonomy level 5 ready by the end of this year.

Speaking at the World AI Conference in Shanghai Elon Musk says he's confident that Tesla will reach full autonomy by the end of this year. As a Tesla shareholder this gets me super excited!

In this video I share my thoughts on the battle to reach level 5 autonomy and how I see it playing out.

You have Tesla and a couple of other contenders such as Comma AI and Mobile Eye who are using cameras and deep learning. And they currently at level 2 and trying to incrementally progress to level 5.


The idea behind this strategy stems from the fact that our driving infrastructure is built for vision and the fact that humans are capable drivers with just two eyes to perceive the world and a brain to make decisions. These company's thus use cameras to see the world and they are developing complex machine learning systems to then perceive and react to the inputs from the cameras.

On the other side of the fence then you have everybody else such as Waymo, Cruise & Uber using cameras with Lidar. They are trying to go straight to Level 4 whereby they are at full autonomy but within the confines of a particular area. Once they get there, they want to then scale out geographically.


The big question is who will get there first?
