Back in 1992 Honda went really bold and stuck a liter engine into a 600cc chassis. Back then WSBK racing was held with 750cc in-line 4 cylinders vs 1000cc twin-cylinders and anything over 750cc was considered a sport tourer and not a superbike.
This kickstarted a frenzy by all other manufacturers to respond and it took quite a few years for the opposition to respond. Kawasaki only came out with the ZX9R in 1994 and the first Yamaha YZF R1 was launched in 1998. This response was necessary as the next closest opposition bike to the iconic 1992 CBR900R was the Yamaha FZR1000 and was 34kg heavier.
The rest is history as we know today a proper Superbike is a 1000cc in capacity.....
